ADHD Q & A

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health condition that primarily affects school-aged children but is also diagnosed in adults.

Researchers have no clear idea of what causes ADHD. A combination of genetic and environmental factors might play a role in a child or adult developing ADHD.

What are the symptoms of ADHD?

Children with ADHD find it hard to pay attention and follow directions. These problems affect their academic performance and behaviors at home and in social situations. Adults with ADHD have the same difficulties staying focused on one task at a time.

Hyperactivity and impulsive actions are typical results of ADHD, especially in children. Kids with ADHD usually can’t sit still for any length of time, and they often engage in reckless behaviors. Hyperactivity and impulsivity can be present in adults but is usually less severe.

If these symptoms interfere with your child’s education or lessen your quality of life as an adult, you should schedule an ADHD evaluation at Adnan Durrani, MD LLC.

Dr. Durrani offers comprehensive screenings to determine if your symptoms relate to ADHD or another underlying condition. He meets with you through the online telehealth platform so that you don’t have to travel away from home to get the care you need.

How is ADHD treated?

Treating ADHD is similar in both children and adults. Dr. Durrani customizes a treatment plan to your needs and the severity of your symptoms.

Most treatment plans involve a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT helps children and adults learn how to recognize their negative behaviors to make changes that improve their focus and attention. CBT provides you with the tools you need to stay organized and reduce the distractions in your life.

Dr. Durrani teaches parents and other caregivers of young children how to get desired behaviors from children and how to use consequences to address negative behaviors.

Medications

The two kinds of medications available for ADHD are stimulants and non stimulants. Both medicines can provide significant symptom relief and make it easier for people with ADHD to stay focused and avoid impulsive behaviors.

Dr. Durrani prioritizes the health and safety of each patient and carefully supervises their medication therapy. He can make adjustments as needed based on your individual needs. Before you take stimulant medications, Dr. Durrani requires neuropsychological testing with a clinical psychologist.

All services are currently available only through Dr. Durrani’s online telemedicine platform.
